The way social media has swept our daily business activities agents are finding it harder to come up with ways to reach their potential clients on a more personal level. Dawn, what a wonderful tribute and soooooo much deserved! I’m so proud of what you have done over the years with your ambition and Patty’s encouragement.

Like you, Patty is one of MY heroes.

In my case, I used to answer a lot of questions on a party planning website’s forum. Patty also would share her knowledge with people planning a party or other young party planners. And I was thrilled to see her name on the forums because I owned several of Patty’s books and I couldn’t believe that I actually was “meeting” her, in a manner of speaking, online.

As you may not know, I don’t “write short” – LOL. I also would write long, detailed answers to people who posted on the forum. One day I got an e-mail from Patty that basically read – “Who are you and why haven’t you written a book?”

Well, in reality, I had written one but couldn’t find a publisher. I sent Patty the finished chapters and she and I started an online and telephone friendship.

One day she received a call from a publisher asking her to write another party planning book and she told them she would do it but only if they would let me be the co-author.

Since they had no idea of who I was, Patty sent them the chapters of my unpublished book and they agreed to let me join Patty in writing “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Throwing a Great Party.”

I couldn’t be more excited or intimidated. But Patty being Patty assured me that I could do it and we did write the book…in about six weeks – an unheard of brief length of time to finish a book that was almost 300 pages long.

In fact, it wasn’t until after the book was completed that Patty and I met in person!

After that, Patty and I started our own party planning website and through her encouragement (and I’m sure prodding), talked the producers of the National Halloween, Costume and Party Show into letting me work with Patty to produce the educational sessions.

Patty never takes enough credit for all the things she’s done for you, me and I know dozens of other women.

Thank you so much for honoring her in this special way and congratulations and best wishes for your continued success. You’re a firecracker and I know you’re going to continue to light up the sky!

So true… about not wanting to be SOLD. Consumers want to be cared for and educated. Once you create the environment where they feel comfortable, safe, educated then they will trust what you say. It is all about caring and listening to them. Really once you are in the minds of your prospects you are in their pockets. Once they know you are in it for them and not the fast buck. They will do exactly what you said above… stand in line patiently, to do business with you!

It is really easy to receive referrals …IF they are built in the sale. Not everyone will buy. But everyone will remember you did 3% more in helping them.

Again…great comment Rand. I appreciate your insight, experience and advice for our business friends.

It is just natural to feel that way. Grabbing the helpful tips and working on their confidence level with a coach will get them on the right track and get them to rock their market.

You are right on target here! Agree with your observations and experience. It is a very interesting thing but everyone is prejudice. We call it something else but it is prejudice not necessary becauseof skin color but for a host of reasons. Most have to do with our personal experiences and upbringing.

One last thing. The last portion of your message also rang true and made me think about how every person we begin to serve the needs and wants of ultimately wants to be served in their own unique way. If you are looking and listening and asking the right questions it will be easy to determine. Unfortunately, most are unaware of this need.

People no longer want to be SOLD anything. However, the do still want to buy. Create an environment wherein they can buy, but can do so in the manner they feel comfortable about.In fact, if you do this, they will stand in line patiently, to do business with you.

Rand, I appreciate your points you made here. So true. We market everyday and some do not even know it. It is the sad truth that we are all being judged on everything we do. Even when we where in school you are judged. Same thing as an adult. Go on an interview…same thing. The colors you choose to paint your office may for some clients not sit well. Of course we can not live up to others expectations. But if you are aware of their needs and you can find ways to help and fill those needs then it makes things a bit easier.

For when we are creating content or in conversation, it is about how are you able to serve this person better. That has to do with listening and learning about each of your clients and then following through with the sound bytes they give you. In my article I was giving simple tips to just think about when creating those opportunities.

It’s funny. Ask people if they would consider themselves marketers and many will “no, not really”. Yet, as you said in your article, we are not only being judged by things but it goes even further than that.
For example. I would submit for your consideration that EVERy thing you do is marketing. It is the way you say your name. The accent you have or don;t have. The way your desk is neat and clean, the way it is not clean neat. The car you drive. The photos you have hanging in your office. The way you follow the law by not rolling through stop signs. It is the things you say and the things you don;t say. All of this is creating a perception in the mind of whoever comes in contact with you.
If they are someone considering hiring you to serve their needs then the judgment gets a little bit more rigid.
So, if everything we do is marketing knowingly or unknowingly, then is it possible that we can control the perception we create? YES!
If you understand this process then you can plan for it and make sure that everything you dom sat and display should be thought about. Most people never think that all of their little habits might be pushing business away. It is.
Remember, everything you do and don;t do create a perception, right or wrong about who someone thinks you are.
One more point. Be careful if you put your photo on your business card. If that is the only thing someone has to make a decision about who you are or might be then they will use your photo to determine the way they perceive you. Unless you happen to look the way someone they think should look who is trustworthy, dependable, successful them you just might be taking a big gamble that could be losing business for you before you ever even have a chance to secure that persons buisness.

I think most solo professionals are afraid to being judged and of course they use the cover to show a nice “face”. Working in the fashion world and a a small busness owner I thig that both make sense , yes to the cover and yes to the content of what we offer. If both hit the nerve of our markets’ needs we are ready to rock!

This is a great tell-it-like-it-is post, Dawn and I know you’ve opened the eyes of realtors everywhere. It’s so important to be continually present with your target market — to speak their language and show up as a resource over and over. I love the 1/2 hour proximity tip. All realtors can have their territory and own a domain if they establish themselves as the leader and then show up repeatedly. I know I always call the person who staying in touch!
